If you are new to accepting payments by card, then you're going to need a merchant services account. Here are some frequently asked questions about Adelante's merchant services.

What is a merchant account?

A merchant account allows you to process credit and debit cards from your Chip and PIN card machine as your business account cannot offer this facility. A merchant account works as a link between your Chip and PIN card machine and your business account. When a payment is put through your Chip and PIN terminal, it is processed through the merchant account. You must have one to be able to take card payments.

How do I get one?

Contact us and we will ask you some questions about your business, and then prepare a price quote for you. If you are happy, we will arrange the merchant account for you over the phone. It takes between 7 to 10 days to set up.

How much does it cost?

There is a one off joining fee to get the account set up which is £50 for long term accounts and £100 for short term accounts, and then you are charged per transaction. This is a fixed percentage of the value of the transaction for credit cards and a fixed price per transaction for debit cards.

What is the difference between card present and card not present transactions?

  • Card present refers to a system where the chip on the card is read, and the customer having to input their PIN number also.
  • Card not present refers to a system where the card details are input manually, usually being telephone or mail order payments.

Card present transactions usually attract a lower charge than card not present transactions.

How long does it take to get a merchant account?

Once we have received your signed application form, it usually takes between 7 to 10 working days to gain approval on the account.

Do I need to have a business bank account first?
